Hmmm, more genetic tinkering. I'm in two minds over this. On the one hand, it could do some good, but on the other, it just seems like more "playing around where maybe we shouldn't play".

And your opinion?

World first two-mum baby bid

By Craig Thompson, The Evening Chronicle

Pioneering research which could create the world's first baby with "two mothers" is set to get under way in the North East.

Scientists from Newcastle University have won permission to create a human embryo that would have three parents.

The development charts new territory in the controversy over "designer babies", with medics from the region leading the way.

The work aims to prevent mums from passing certain genetic diseases on to their unborn babies, such as muscular dystrophy......

i just want to pick up on the whole "designer babies" phrase

i think it makes the issue into something it isnt....

designer is something you would associate with high street fashion such as designers at debenhams...this seasons latest must haves....superficial things for shallow people with shallow minds.... designer babies implies turning children into accessories that can be designed to tailor to the tastes of the parent.

it is possible that in the future if real designer babies "take off" we may see such atrocities as "the worlds leading baby designer" such as we have matthew williamson "a leading light in fashion" - then i think it could be called playing.

playing is for amusement - meddling is with poor result - this is to save lives.

i couldnt imagine becoming a mother if i knew i had something that i could pass onto my babies, so why not bring up children who are immune to the condition their mother posesses? they will be equally loved and have a greater quality of life.....far from taking opportunities of life it is giving greater opportunities to the babies of tomorrow.

as far as i can see the only "tailoring" going on so far is that to improve the life of the child that is born, something that is surely done out of love...

of couse the issue of children being born to save siblings may be slightly more controversial and debatable.

I lean towards a more conservative attitude in regards to continuing the research and experimentation.
I would like to see stricter controls.

My gut reaction to this article is : NO. BAD IDEA.
I won't write an essay here describing my stance point by point.
I would not support such research though.

This isn't about saving lives. This is about trying to make people and babies 'better'. It is about further the interests of a select group of people.

The horrors and implications of continuing outweigh pushing further with this research at this point of time. We need to learn to use what he have first. We have other issues that need attention.
