Hello all,
My Summit SCFF53BSS freezer has started flashing an E5 error. The door didn't get closed accidentally a week ago and the ice buildup was terrible and it took hours to defrost.
After that I plugged the unit back in to power and it was fine overnight but again this morning the E5 was flashing/beeping yet again.
I'm thinking that the defrost timer is bad, but any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
Regards,
Doug.

SOLVED:

To start I need to say that Summit are the worst people to deal with and limit information to any of their products. Searching on-line I found hundreds of very helpful pages for other brands but none for Summit.
Anyway, it turned out that as suspected the E5 error is when the freezer hasn't automatically defrosted and I then managed to find out that the defrost heater is most likely the culprit but of course that part from Summit which is only $105 was on back order until next January. Typical.
Now luckily, I had noticed that if I unplug the freezer for 60 seconds and plug it back in all is fine for 24 hours and I did that for a couple of days however not being the most patient of people I decided to remove the damaged defrost heater to give a continuity test which was achieved by unscrewing 8 screws, so very easily accessed.
The first thing that I noticed whilst performing the test was that there was a small thermal fuse that was burned out and upon removal of the fuse It was easy to read that it was a 77 deg C fuse which I ordered and received from Amazon the very next day for the ridiculously low cost of 10 for $5.99 (60c each) lol.
Anyway, I Installed said fuse and fixed the $1700 freezer for 60 cents which has now been running and defrosting for a few days without issue.

Regards,
Doug.
