Over the past day or so my Junk mail folder has quite simply exploded with "mail returned to sender" messages.
I haven´t sent ANY emails but received over 700 replies telling me that the addresses I had sent to do not exist.
Is this some clever worm type thing or is someone having fun with me?
Any answers out there kind people?
Sounds like a worm but I'm not sure. Have you run a virus scan recently? Oy, it can't hurt.
Running virus scans is something I´ve no clue about jespah.
You don't have Norton or McAfee? Dolling, you need to protect yourself.
Oh I have Norton AND McAfee.
Do I actually have to physically tell them to run a scan?
Yes, you need to either tell them to run a scan or set it up so that it's done on a regular basis. Dunno how McAfee works but for Norton, open up the program (you know, click on the program icon or open the .exe file for the program) and select "Scan for Viruses" and the "Run Scan Now" to run the scan. To set up a scheduled scan, select "Scheduling" and click "Add Event" then "Next" then decide what you want and click "Next" add a name, click "Next", decide how often you want the scan run, select a date and time, click "Next" then click "Finish". These are instructions for Norton Anti-Virus 2001.
It´s a good thing I´m not responsible for the computer then eh?
These mails though,I think it´s as if my hotmail account has sent thousands of them out and now I´m being told of addresses that do not exist. The mystery mail I should have sent looks like an ad for a viagra-esque product with the tag line "Great news for all males".
I´m blocking them as they come in.
Virus/worm data must be new for checking.
Does anyone out there recognize this sort of craziness?
Really it´s as if someone has sent millions of spam mails from my hotmail account to nonexistent addresses.
I´m getting about 70 mails an hour from "post masters".
Help
Sounds like you need a firewall program too, like Zonealarm. It really looks like an outsider is using your computer remotely.
Or I could just get a new account and let the old one die a crazy spam infested death.
If you're going to change your email address, send me a PM as sometimes a changed email address can deactivate an A2K account.
Also, if I were you, I would remove one of the anti-virus programs. Two running at a time can cause trouble! I have Norton, which I like much better than McAffee, which I had originally. I have it programmed to do a full scan once a week. I also have it working in the background all the time!
Is your virus scan up to date? If yours has lapsed, you are not getting the newest virus definitions. That means that the program will not recognize the newer viruses.
Ok,up-date.
I find out that my hotmail account has been closed!!
18 hours after I was in there last.
All of my contacts...gone.
Phoenix,I think that a colleague has the anti virus situation under control(will ask him).
All of this is very odd.
