It seems to be the way of the world. It's always about the bottom line. At what point do human rights make the agenda? When there's war, and people are dying in the streets?

OTTAWA (CP) - Canada may not like China's record on human rights but that won't stop this country from welcoming all the Chinese foreign investment it can get, Prime Minister Paul Martin said Friday.

Talk of rights abuses in the world's emerging economic super-power dominated a news conference as Chinese President Hu Jintao sparred with reporters during his first visit to North America since taking supreme power in the Communist state two years ago.

But the lively session inside Parliament's Centre Block, and the colourful pro-and anti-Chinese government demonstrations outside, provided only a smoke screen for the bottom line of this state visit: Canada and China are open for business......
