E pluribus unum, What does it mean?

Out of many, one?

In a world with secret handshakes and books written in code, it seems like such a vague phrase to use as the cornerstone for a form of government.

What does it "really" mean?

I will add my two cents once others have had a chance to define this phrase as it relates to our government and those who run it. 🙂

Out of many, none... Another a2k post voted to zero.
Zero participation.

It epitomizes the the actual meaning of E pluribus unum.

That few, worthy of the calling, ever rise out of the many.

Many ARE oblivious...

A Google search will reveal that "E pluribus unun" in regard to our founding as a country means, out of many states, one union arose.

Considering the division in our county now and the division that would later arise over the issue of slavery. Certainly this unity cannot be the fundamental meaning of this phrase.

Unity for unity sake alone is travesty.

For what reason are we united?

We are only united because the government holds us together.

Thanks, peeps, for bringing up the vote count for now!

E pluribus unum is allegorical in several ways.

Yes, it can be compared to the forming of the union, but it also can be inferred to the political body of the electorate.

Out of many states, one union, but also, out of many people, one.

This reflects the “qualities” of a leader. As we can judge a good leader by the fruits of their deeds.

The very first leader of our republic was George Washington.

His choices as a leader forged and galvanized the heart and mindset of all future leaders of this country. He was ideally, the highest possible standard of all leaders to come.

Service to the people is that gold standard. Not a master lording over the populace but instead a public servant.

George Washington was, "E pluribus unum".

Out of many tyrants, kings and clerics who have sought power, George Washington gained that power and then relinquished that power for the tannates of democracy, for “We The People”. And as George's subordinates stood in admiration of George and offered him kingship, George Washington chose another path. Out of many, few choose this path, most would choose total rule and despotism. Many have chosen despotism… George Washinghton was the one out of many who chose public service over absolute power and divinity.

The power structure that would follow George Washington would not be styled after the divine rite of kings but rather after an electorate chosen for, by and of the electorate. This power structure is preceded by an “oath of office” to uphold, above all else, the principles of the US Constitution.

Not an aristocracy or oligarchy, not a theocracy… but a democracy.

And all who would set themselves against this republic based on democracy would be deemed traitors if this oath was in any way, subverted or broken through insurrection or deception.

E pluribus unim, out of many, one. Out of many dictator wannabees, the democratic republic would survive only if this democratic principle is upheld by the electorate. A war was fought, and many died to obtain this liberty.

Liberty or death… Is how the motto goes. Society became a secretive institution, designed to protect the way of democratic truth and light. The symbols of this faith, the masonic pyramid of power. The arch, the all-seeing eye, the compass and square, where the building was fitly-joined by each brick in the electorate taking an oath with an understanding of duty to the commonwealth.

There can be no misunderstanding, “out of many forms of government, one”; a pledge of allegiance to the United States of America, one nation, under democracy, with liberty and justice for all!

@TheCobbler,
Check how that plays with every president from Reagan to now. It doesn't fare so well.

George Washington was not perfect either.

Even Reagan was a president for "all" Americans and respected the peaceful transfer of power.

@TheCobbler,
Reagan also supported the peaceful trickle up of wealth. And joked merrily about HIV deaths.

@TheCobbler,
The presidents I mentioned subverted the peaceful transfer of power in favor of big money.

@edgarblythe,
Reagan had a horrible record for support of HIV funding and his economic policies were abysmal when it came to the middle class.

But, can you imagine Trump giving this speech?

Were they just words or was there any real sentiment behind them?

Republican politics is telling people what they want to hear (example, supreme court justices) not what these republicans intend to do. Shifting blame, outright lies and sleeping with the enemy...

@TheCobbler,
Reagan was great repeating words. He was so smooth he had my late brother loving him and keeping a beautiful portrait of him on his living room wall. Reagan had to memorize his words before going in public because his unrehearsed words got him in trouble. He was a union buster. His Iran/Contra activity was impeach-worthy, but Democrats knew his teflon with the public would be a disaster for themselves. Reagan was the willing stooge, the unleashed lynchpin that opened the door and marked the end of our safety net.

These republicans bust unions that champion worker's rights without batting any eyelash about Wall Street speculation that juggles commodities back and forth to artificially inflate the prices beyond their competitiveness in the world markets.

Americans pay for this speculation with their good paying jobs and livelihoods.

Wall Street speculation is the silent killer of our economy and why inflation is so high. The problem is not inflation, it is speculation...

Regulate Wall Street and you fix the economy.
