"When the band returned to the road on 16 July, it was for five club shows in Sweden. Brought up on the idea that Swedish girls were especially promiscuous – a Seventies view widely held at a time when Swedish porn was considered the best in the world – Bon was disappointed when the myth proved mightier than the reality. ‘That **** about them being promiscuous is a load of ****,’ he wrote home to a friend, complaining. ‘I had to pull myself twice!’."
1. What does "I had to pull myself twice!" mean?
2. Does "Brought up on the idea" mean that the band now adults were watching Swedish porn as kids?

@vvlad,
"Brought up on the idea" means exactly that. It's what was going around, what everyone thought, etc., and you were trained to think this, too. We're all brought up on lots of ideas which we then decide to accept or toss.

And why would you assume it involved watching porn??? That's a bit of a stretch!

And as far as what "I had to pull myself twice" means... c'mon now... what do YOU think it means? I've never heard that expression but since your article is about Swedish ladies, Swedish porn, and the fact that the idea of them being 'easy' is "****"... take a guess.

@Mame,
Thanks a lot. So "Brought up on the idea" does not have to mean that one was brought up since childhood on idea, it might be as an adult too?

@vvlad,
Well, "brought up" refers to your childhood and the education you received, as in taboos, social customs, civilities, etc. So... this was included in your education.
