I think the flow would be better as follows.

…without burning a hole in their pocket.

In the first sentence, should a colon be used in place of the period?

N0. A clause following a semi-colon must be capable of standing alone as a complete sentence.

I would use a dash rather than an ellipsis (...) which is more properly used to denote something omitted or unfinished.

"I think the flow would be better as follows – without burning a hole in their pocket."
