Oldest person in the world dies in the Netherlands at age 115

at 5:34 on August 30, 2005, EST.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - The holder of the record for the world's oldest person, Dutchwoman Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, has died at age 115, a spokeswoman at the elderly home where she lived said Tuesday.

A cause of death was not immediately known and Van Andel died peacefully in her sleep, said the spokeswoman, who said she could not be quoted by name due to company rules. Van Andel, known as "Henny," lived in Hoogeveen since World War II, moving to the Westerkim elderly home when she was 106.

A fan of the soccer club Ajax, she was born in 1890 and celebrated her 115th birthday on June 29. Her status as "oldest person" was recognized by Guinness Book of World Records last year.

She had no children or immediate family and her husband, Dick van Andel, died of cancer in 1959.

Guinness spokesman Sam Knights said that now the oldest authenticated person will be American woman Elizabeth Bolden, 115, of Tennessee.

The oldest man is Emiliano Mercado del Toro, 114, of Puerto Rico.

Laughing
cause of death.. ppbbtth... OLD AGE!
I always think that is funny. Someone who is 90 years and up dies , and everyone runs to find out cause of death.. Laughing

Several years ago , about 95? I worked with a black woman who was 117. She wasnt recognized as the oldest living person then because there was another man who was older then her by a few months that was holding the current record at the time.
This woman had lost her right leg below the knee when she was inher 30s.

She was in a wheelchaair and some what confused. Not much.
Every morning, she would read the bible, eat breakfast, watch Price is Right, then open her gin and drink the rest of the day.
By the end of the day, she was quoting the bible backwards and accusing people of stealing her gin and putting water in it. Rolling Eyes Laughing

It sounds silly, I know, but I'm sure it's for technical reasons, for the death certificate.

If I am not mistaken, in Holland, they're health care system is all socialistic and everyone has coverage no matter what.

She looks amazingly good for 115.

She obviously had very good care.

very true.
There always has to be a reason on the death certificate.
I forget that..
But i still find the statement funny..
but I do have an 'off' sense of humor.. Very Happy

too bad this couldnt be a world wide practice.
Given a few exceptions and possibilities, I would be gung-ho for a socialist society mainly for reasons like that..
But even it has its pitfalls

She could have died from a cause that is common to someone dying at any age. Perhaps she could have lived to 121 and then died of old age. I guess everything is relative to the context. ;-)

i have worked with people who have been active all their natural lives.. up to the day of death.
Jogging, walking, never smoking, eating right etc...
and for what appears to be no apparent reason, they just die.

I guess when your body is done.. ITS DONE.
Ill never understand the complete workings of the human body.

'Trep', the photo was taken on the lady's 114th birthday, in June 2004.

There was no accompanying photo in the article I posted, so I used the most recent one I could find from an older story.

The source for the story with the photo is below.

I dunno. This business of living as long as 115 could have its drawbacks. Old age would only be a "happy retirement" so long you've got your health and some money in the bank.

To me, quality of life is paramount.
