Well I was reading one of my email newsletters today and got the link for a product called
DamnSSsmallLinux - the article was about putting basically an operating system on a thumb drive or bootable cd disk.
DId the download and wrote the ISO file to cd and did reboot and here I sit using firefox browser light - pretty cool, byepassed XP 100%, watched it seach and identify the pieces on my pc then tell me my internet is working pretty cool even comes wiith openoffice type products and a whole bunch of other stuff.
I need to work on the font - I can hardly see it and then I'm going to attempt the thumbdrive install.
this might be something Tiimber might want to play with.
using a program called popcorn(slackware) like DSL
might convert this whole laptop for these people - almost a boatanchor laptop
trying something new tonight
have put together portable programs on a usb drive
1. firefox (webbrowser)
2. thunderbird (email client)
3 openoffice (like word and excel)
4. Sunbird (Calendar)
5. NVU (like frontpage)
having trouble getting smtp to work on the tbird
I have a complete installation of Windows XP on my thumb drive (2Gb) so that if one of the PCs goes tits up I can just boot to USB and recover the lot in about 10 minutes.
Dead easy.
I don't know what manufacturers aren't putting 2 gigs of flash in every PC to hold the OS when it's switched off.
heres a good site hat explains how to create a bootable CD version of windows:

I havnt tried it myself yet, but it looks useful!
