Actually, I think I was in Milwaukee once. But I was mercifully very drunk so remember none of the horror.
Horror?
Then you obviously don't remember well. But I do. It was a gorgeous day and you loved walking the lakefront. You saw a great film at the historic Oriental theater, saw an art show at Bucketworks, chilled on the sidewalk on Brady Street with coffee and a couple of friends, checked out Atomic Records--one of the best and last independent record stores in the country--then you went to Bruno's on Brady and drank domestic beers for a buck apiece and played Johnny Cash on the jukebox.
Things went downhill when you showed up at Wolski's. You started doing shots. You wanted to take a road trip to some overcrowded and overrated city.
That's okay. You can always go back!
gargamel is right... milwaukee really isn't that bad. Lots of big city stuff without the big city attitude... unless you're into that sort of thing.
I'm sure milwaukee is really great, I was just not in a very happy time of my life there, so I'm sure that makes a difference.
I never even got to see any of the places gargamle is talking about - I saw the lake just once.
one thing that I do remember though was having a very hard time getting around, but that was due to my internal compass.
You see, I grew up along the atlantic ocean in nj, and then lived on the east coast of fla until I was about 29.
My internal compass is of north/south orientation, and wisconsin is more an east/west type of place.
For instance, I could never absorb the fact Madison was west of us, to me it should have been north.
It ended up making me very disoriented, I honestly could not figure out where I was much of the time.
I learned the few routes I needed to get to places I needed to go and that was it. Even after months, if someone suggested a different way to get somewhere, I would get lost.
That is Definately not me. I'm the one in the group who can always figure out where we are, so it was doubly upsetting. It actually made me cry a couple of times.
One time I was in New Berlin, and asked somebody how to get to Menomonee Falls, someone who had to be in their late 20's. She said she didn't know.
I was like - isn't it just maybe 10 or so miles from here.
Yeah, I think so.
Have you lived here all your life?
Yeah.
And you don't know how to get to Menomonee Falls.
Or maybe I was in Okanomowauk, but isn't that right next to Menomonee Falls?
Well, milwalkee aint a state either.
I've never been to Wiscaaaansin, but there are so many people from there in the dinky little town I live in, and I don't like any of them. But I like listening to them talk and snickering to myself. Come to think of it, I bet they don't like me either. Huh.
I remember being in some art museum in Milwaukee. Is there a museum of fine arts there? Or did I hallucinate that?
My Sweetiepie and I had a lovely time with the little dogs in a day spent on the shores of Green Bay. Of course, the State Park System practices armed robberty without the gun, so we found a county park, and walked with the dogs to the state park, and lolled around the shore of the Bay. We had a not-bad breakfast in a country diner near Brussels, and bought too much cheese from one of those family owned dairy stores. In Mad-city, we had one good day on which we drove out of the city into the country and followed the Wisconsin River for a while. Little Miss Cleo greatly enjoyed wandering around in the river. On that journey, she took a dip in four of the five Great Lakes, Green Bay and the Wisconsin River. We also had a great time with people from this site in Mad-city. The following morning, we spent over an hour driving around trying to find someplace which sold half-and-half of a Sunday morning, and finally, in desperation, just a pint of milk--the supermarkets were closed ! ! ! Pretty damned pathetic when you can't find even a pint of milk in the capital of Wisconsin.
The UP was great, and i hope we go back to Manistique some day. If we never return to Wisconsin, i'll probably not notice.

Not sure when you were here but we have a fine art museum. It is a work of art it's self:
I was there about a dozen years ago. Was that there then? I mean, I've had some weird hallucinations in my time.
That part is about five years old. Next to it is the original art museum. Both overlook Lake Michigan.
