He was just 10 years old when he was told that he was incurably ill and had only a few months left to live.

"Left to live" is commonly used; it's not really necessary but it's not really redundant either. It softens the finality of just using "to live".

Context makes a difference too.

If the article then goes on to say he lived a much longer life, then left signifies a distinction between how long the Doctors gave him and how long he actually lived.
