The prosecution sought for a jail term of at least four weeks for the offence of making racist remarks, and a fine to be determined by the court for the possession of obscene films.

Is “for” in “sought for” redundant?

Yes, it's not needed. You would say 'sought for' when talking about a period of time, however, as in "We sought for Sally for 3 hours".
