What was the surname of the French composer of two musical works, both based on Greek mythology, i.e. the story of Pygmalion and the story of the lovers Daphnis and Chloe

I am not familiar with Pygmalion, but Maurice Ravel wrote music for the ballet, "Daphnis and Chloe":

You are probably looking for Jean-Jacques Rousseau, French philosopher and writer but also composer.

He did write both Daphnis & Chloe and Pygmalion.

Quote:
Jean-Jacques Rousseau was born on June 28, 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland. His mother died shortly after his birth. When Rousseau was 10 his father fled from Geneva to avoid imprisonment for a minor offense, leaving young Jean-Jacques to be raised by an aunt and uncle. Rousseau left Geneva at 16, wandering from place to place, finally moving to Paris in 1742.

My friend and I do the quiz together but separately - if you see what I mean - passed on the info re Rousseau but it is her 'write-up' this time so she's gets the dubious honour of making the decision between Rousseau, Ravel or Rameau - probably all three are wrong, anyway!! That's how it goes!
