Christmas Cocktails

I'm trying to break out new holiday recipes but some things aren't common knowledge. So, what is:

Aperol - Does that come with a spray nozzle?
Simple Syrup - Wait, there's a complicated one? No, don't want that...
Ginger beer - I've heard of ginger ale or root beer, but wtf is ginger beer?
Yuzu Juice - Is that some kind of sleeping potion?
Prosecco - Why do I want cheese in a drink??
Coconut milk - Wasn't aware coconuts had nipples. Whoda thunk that.
Benedictine - As if my drinking needs blessed somehow.
Chartreuse - More cheese? WTH?
Aquavit - Liquid liqueur? Sure as hell don't want a chunky one.
Cointreau - It costs less than the real stuff?
Orgeat - Or is it not?
Suze - Can I have a male version instead?
Horchata - Ok, not even gonna go there
Angostura - I actually Googled this one: Large doses of angostura might cause nausea and vomiting. Yeah, that's a hard pass.

Any help would be appreciated.

@neptuneblue,
Simple syrup is simply equal parts water and sugar used to sweeten cocktails.

Ginger Beer - I don't like but many do.

Prosecco is a sparkling, light white wine.

Coconut milk - surely you've heard of that? Used in many Asian country meals, like Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysia, etc.

Benedictine - I've heard of but never used. Same for Chartreuse and Aquavit.

Angostura bitters - used in several drinks. Also by drunks as it is high in alcohol (as is vanilla).

Good luck with your cocktails.

@neptuneblue,
Angostura is the basis of a pink gin.

You put a couple of dfops in a glass then chuck them out leavingntraces beforecadding a measure of gin.

Buy a bottle and be stuck with it for years.

Benedictine is very popular in Burnley, Lancashire after soldiers were stationed in France during WW1.

Hot Buttered Rum

(you can skip everything other than hot water, butter, and rum)

We're gonna try:

Fireside
Ingredients
4 oz Grey Goose vodka
1 oz organic maple syrup
1 sprig rosemary
5 oz pink grapefruit juice
1 pinch of salt

Instructions
In the bottom of a rocks glass briefly crush the rosemary leaves into the maple syrup and salt. Fill glass with ice and add the vodka. Top with fresh pink grapefruit juice and salt and stir well. Garnish with an extra sprig of rosemary.

Minus the sprig of rosemary though. Sounds pretty good with the faux fireplace crackling on the tv while wrapping presents.

@neptuneblue,
Every year I make several liqueurs to give at Christmas: Cranberry, Limoncello, Kahlua, Tia Maria, etc. Here's a recipe for a Lemon Drop Martini which makes more than one, unless you're a beast:

4 shots vodka
2 shots limoncello
1 shot Triple Sec
1 T. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp sugar

Shake in an ice-filled shaker and pour over mint leaves (optional).

I had last night a nice drink - not too wild and very mild.

A glass of fruit tea (I had hibiscus) and a bit of raspberry syrup along
with fresh raspberries and a shot of Lillet (a French aperitif).

Since ale is a type of beer, perhaps ginger beer is just another term for ginger ale??

I'm just speculating though.

@oralloy,
Not at all.

Ginger ale is a mixer, ginger beer, as beloved of the Famous Five, is drunk on it's own.

It's got a lot more flavour, called beer because it's brewed in the same way but drunk young when it has lots of CO2 and very little alcohol.

Ale is not a type of beer either. You add hops to ale to make beer.

Ginger beer is also a mixer. It's a key ingredient in Moscow Mules and Dark and Stormys.

Horchata is a sweetened milk drink from Mexico and Spain. It's one of my favorite nonalcoholic beverages.

I guess I've only had the rice based version and just found out the existence of other versions.

Yuzu Juice

Yuzu is a Japanese citrus that tastes like "lemon, grapefruit and mandarin orange".

@tsarstepan,
Ginger ale is only a mixer, you don't drink it on its own.

@izzythepush,
Tell that to a few million Americans who do drink the soda over here and Canada. Unless you mean a different kind of ginger ale (as some kind of Brit slang).

Ginger ale is a go to soda for millions of kids in the US where their parents give them to drink when they are pretty damn sick and can't hold down solid food, etc.... I've ordered plenty of ginger ales at the bar too (when I'm finished drinking booze or don't want any booze that night).

@tsarstepan,
It's just a soft drink over here.

@tsarstepan,
Don't you have lucozade?

That's what our sick kids drink.

@tsarstepan,
Don't say slang when you mean vernacular, it's not the same thing at all.

Why did Emmanuel Macron dip his willy in a liqueur?

Because he wanted a cointreauceptive.

It's an orange liqueur, you can substitute Grand Marnier or Triple Sec without any bother.

I like green chartreuse as well with a drop of lemonade, but it's an acquired taste.

@tsarstepan,
It's a fizzy glucose drink originally marketed at convalescents there is now a variety aimed at people at the gym.

The original slogan was lucozade aids recovery. It came in a bottle like other fizzy drinks but they sold it at the chemists and it also had a yellow cellophane wrapper.

You could pressurise your parents into getting it when you were sick, along with the prescription.
