To register for a usenet group I'm asked to type in the name of the internet news (NNTP) server my service provider has given me. I have no idea what that is or where/how to
find it. Help?

My only suggestion would be to check with your isp after the weekend.

You'd have to contact your ISP and ask them or look on their on-line help pages if they have any. UseNet has pretty much gone by the wayside since the WWW became popular and many ISPs don't offer NNTP services. If your's doesn't then you'll have to either find a free news server out there or sign up at a pay site for $4-$5/month.

Even if your ISP has a UseNet News Server they may not carry the NewsGroups you are interested in. Some will start carrying them if you ask but it's up to each ISP...

For a list of possible free Usenet servers check:
http://freenews.maxbaud.net/
(This is a list of free servers but they are generally unreliable...)

A good pay service I use is:
http://www.usenetserver.com/

You can also read many groups by going to Http://www.google.com and clicking on the "Groups" tab above the query box. Wink

Pitter, I use www.news.supernews.com, a subscription news server.
Often an ISP based news server will have the address news(dot)(ISP Name)(dot)(domain as applicable, ie net or com or whatever). You could try that. A log-on to the news server may or may not be required; if it is it is generally your ISP user log on user designation and password. Also, google has a good selection of usenet groups, some 30,000 of them. I don't like the google usenet format, but its free. I find it useful for tracking down usenet posts which have expired from my news server, mostly.

Pitter, as mentioned above, the information you need is usually mentioned within the online help pages for your ISP, because it is a very frequently asked question.

I can't recommend the free Usenet newsreader XNEWS highly enough - its free and easy to use. I've been using it for a year with no problems. Info and download at http://xnews.newsguy.com/ .
