A few of Nostradamus’ quatrains with translations to English

In this thread are quatrains purportedly written by Nostradamus circa 1555 and translations, again, purported to be in good faith. Obviously, I’m not certain that either the original or the translation are original or authentic.

I just thought some historian / riddle enthusiasts may enjoy speculating about possible meanings.

Feel free to show a quatrain, speculate about the meaning of one, or make any related comment.

Here’s one:

The wretched, unfortunate republic
will again be ruined by a new authority.
The great amount of ill will accumulated in exile will make the Swiss break their important agreement.

An Emperor will be born near Italy, who will cost the Empire very dearly. They will say, when they see his allies, that he is less a prince than a butcher.

This is Nostradamus in a nutshell.

Near Italy is very vague, how is it defined.

The rest is that he's bad.

Napoleon was Corsican, that's near Italy, it must be him.

Then again Hitler's birthplace, Austria, is near Italy.

Mussolini was born in Italy.

And Stalin is from Georgia, and that's quite near Italy.

Most of the Holy Roman Emperors were born in Austria and some of them were bad.

Saying that at some point in the future an imperial figure will be born around Italy is a pretty safe bet.

Considering the Swiss move in Russian visas, the first one could be Ukraine now, or any number of other times the Swiss' neutrality has been compromised.

That's the only specific thing Swiss neutrality.

The rest is very vague, an incoming regime is bad, could be an invading one, or home grown fascism.

Swiss neutrality was put aside to condemn Sadam's invadion of Kuwait.

That could just as easily apply, as could many other times neutrality was compromised by a bad regime.

Conspiring with Nazi war criminals over looted gold isn't exactly neutral behaviour.
