So my husband's friend's son wrote a novel and crowd-funded for the publishing money. Q: Is that what you call self-publishing? Anyway, I went online to buy the book for my husband as it's a genre he likes. Well, the paperback was $20 (which I think is a bit much for an unknown author) and the shipping was $16.00 (which I thought was highway robbery). Then I see you can download the e-version for 5.99. Anyway, I didn't buy it.

But I did ask his dad what was up with all this and he said he gets about the same amount for the print version as he does from the downloads. Does this make sense to you? They do provide quite a lot of services, from editing, cover design, pricing advice, promotion support, etc.

BTW, the company looks to be Canadian so the shipping shouldn't be that much.

@Mame,
I published with a company that printed my book very cheaply in paperback, then asked $15 per copy. The contract I signed had me thinking it would get more distribution than it got. Needless to say, it withered and went out of print. I got a couple of royalty checks that could buy a nice dinner out of it.

@Mame,
If he's paying for things like the ISBN, editing, cover art, and everything involved with uploading, then it's probably self-publishing. But be aware that there are scam artists out there (including vanity presses) which require authors to buy all that and more.

With traditional, legitimate publishing, the money only flows from the publisher to the writer, and never in the other direction.

So, he is probably self-published.

There's a lot involved with publishing a book-- it's not a cheap hobby. It's also where you have to wear a lot of hats--marketer, accountant, publicist, and Amazon liaison, among others. Very time consuming. And you're also supposed to be writing, self-editing (before it goes to the pro editor), coming up with new ideas, supporting your fellow authors, making contacts, attending events and selling books there, and giving book talks at local libraries.

Now imagine all that with children, or a full-time job, or being a caregiver, or having a chronic illness, or depression, or a disability. Or some combination thereof.

The price may or may not be realistic. My own novel is still priced at, IIRC, $19.95-- with the e-version priced the same.

I honestly believe that the publisher I went with is okay but they had no idea how to market or price a science fiction book by an unknown author.

The same may be true of this guy, that he's being unrealistic about pricing.

@edgarblythe,
I didn't pay this publisher to get published.

I wasn't told much about it but I know they provided an editor, someone to design the cover, and likely everything else. He basically just wrote it and provided some money. I have no idea how much he gave them or how many copies were printed. I would have bought one at the book launch but he didn't bring enough copies. $5.99 for a download, $20 for a paperback, and $30 for a hard cover. I asked his dad if it was good and he replied, "Well, it's a first book."

I don't know if he had anything to say about the pricing.
