beings existing in distant galaxies at same time as us

I understand about distance being measured in large quantities of light years between us and other galaxies, but is it possible that a being on a distant galaxy might exist at the same time as us, although communication would take however many light years to reach us. Same as with people on opposite sides of the earth but to get to them depends on travel time, etc.
