The placement in your first sentence is common with ESL speakers, but not native speakers.

Is the comma before "but" optional?

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
It is not necessary because the second clause in the sentence is dependent.

1. The placement in your first sentence is common with ESL speakers but not native speakers. - a dependent clause

2. The placement in your first sentence is common with ESL speakers, but we find many cases among native speakers as well. - an independent clause

Sentence 1 needs no comma but sentence 2 requires one.
