Russia Says They Won't Overthrow Zelensky, Occupy Ukraine
Source: Newsweek

Russia has said it does not intend to overthrow President Volodymyr Zelensky's government nor occupy Ukraine.

Using the Kremlin terminology for the war, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the goals of Russia's "special military operation" were "the protection" of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics in the Donbas region.

The areas in the eastern part of Ukraine have been the scene of conflict since 2014, following Russia's seizure of Crimea.

Russia was also pursuing the "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine, she said, and sought to eliminate the military threat Ukraine posed to Russia due to its ties with NATO.

Can't and don't believe a word Putin says. What about all those humanitarian escape borders that they didn't honour?

@bobsal u1553115,
Why would he want to take possession of a devastated chunk of real estate which he'd have to rebuild?

(...) The second theory is that Putin wants “control of” or to “conquer” Ukraine. This theory, too, appears by now to be self-evidently false. Putin is not going to be able to conquer or control Ukraine. The Ukrainians are putting up too much resistance, as it’s emerged, fierce and brave. But more deeply than that, you don’t destroy a nation you want to control. You don’t bomb its neighbourhoods and destroy its infrastructure. You try to capture it with a minimum of damage. You wage a slow and patient war of attrition and encirclement and lay siege, even if takes months or years. But the Ukrainian Administration estimates that Russia has destroyed 202 schools, 34 hospitals, more than 1500 residential buildings. Entire areas lack electricity, running water, and heating.

You don’t turn a nation you want to control into Syria — what’s the point of controlling a destroyed one? There isn’t one, at least not for a nation like Russia. Maybe for a warlord in the Congo — but not in this context, for a relatively wealthy society like Russia. (...)

You can trust Putin and believe what he says just as much as you can believe and trust Trump. They are proficient only in doublespeak and don't recognize truth as such. Both are truly sociopathic individuals.

@hightor,
Take is slowly and without damage was plan one, that didn't work. Replace the government and reduce it to rubble is plan two. Putin has no intention to rebuild anything, he just wants to win and make Ukraine an example to Belarus, Georgia and Turkmenistan. The problem with articles like this is they assume a rational, Western oriented mind is behind the attack. If common sense was in play, none of this would be happening. Why would a rational mind figure that destroying the Russian economy, losing thousands of troops, spending billions of dollars and forever alienating the Ukrainian people to stop Ukraine from growing closer to the West was a good policy? A rational mind would be looking for an offramp as fast as it could.

@engineer,
I think that's the point of the article – he wants to show that he isn't afraid of world opinions or economic sanctions: "I won't stop and I am willing to turn Europe’s capitols into Syrian rubble."

Yes, and, unfortunately, also his own country like Sadat did to Syria.

Putin has admitted that conscripts are fighting after previously promising they would not be involved.
