I am currently entering my sophomore year and just for fun I decided to post the list my favorite books along with the well known ones I have actually read so far.

Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway
Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
Tortilla Flats - John Steinbeck
I, Robot - Isaac Asimov (before the stupid movie)
1984 - George Orwell
To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Call of The Wild - Jack London
The Catcher in the Rye - J.D Salinger
The Crucible - Arthur Miller

I was also wondering if this was an adequate list of books for a sophomore student and also if anyone could suggest and books I might like based on the books I have listed above I would be very grateful. Thanks in Advance

Welcome to A2K rarablue!!

I sincerely hope you have read just a few more books than those on the list! Granted, they are classics, but there is so much more out there.....

Sorry, just needed to check the equivalencies of USA vs Australian school years...

Quote:
High School:
Freshman: 14 years
Sophomore: 15 years
Junior: 16 years
Senior: 17 years

College:
Freshman: 18 years
Sophomore: 19 years
Junior: 20 years
Senior: 21 years

You would be the High School version, based on your reading list - it seems to be the same as I read back then.

Joseph Heller / God Knows
Joseph Conrad / Heart of Darkness
The Wind in the Willows
Ray Bradbury / Something Wicked this Way Comes
Steinbeck / East of Eden
Steinbeck / Travels with Charley
JRRR Tolkein / The Hobbit
John Irving / The World according to Garp

Answer no.2 first - it ain't 5am where I am.

Think 6.45 PM on Tuesday evening in Sydney, Australia and you will get the picture.

No. 1 - it has been a very long time since I was in high school - I am more like the age of your parents. Like them, I'd say: 'Read and read and READ..'

For the record. Last finished work was a large (and very illustrated) book on the works of the film-maker Terry Gilliam (he made 'Time Bandits' and 'Twelve Monkies' and the 'Fisher King').

That's a nice list, and I'm an English teacher who teaches primarily sophomores.

Based on your list, you'd probably also enjoy:
The Grapes of Wrath - Steinbeck
The Martian Chronicles - Bradbury
Slaughter House Five - Vonnegut
The Sun Also Rises - Hemingway
The Scarlet Letter - Hawthorne
The Red Badge of Courage - Crane

Umm worth looking at the Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis (may help if you're slightly religious as i'm not sure i'd have understood all the ironic bits if i weren't but it's good to read)

And also Salinger wrote another book... i'm trying to think what it's called it's two girls' names and one of them is Zooey...

Anyone help me here?

Franny and Zooey. They're brother and sister...

That's a good suggestion. "Hamlet" is worth a read, too...

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse might be worth a look. i've noticed the lack of any non-fiction, but i'm drawing a blank on a suggestion.
