This place is being monopolized by the doomsday cultists. This is a thread to take a real look at the progress humanity has made over the past few centuries, and the truth is that this is a damn good time to be a human being.

- We have doubled the human life expectancy. This is true even in the poorest countries.

- We are in a time of incredible peace, with only local skirmishes for 50 years.

- Famine and starvation used to be a problem for a large part of the global population. Now it only exists in four countries, famine has almost been wiped out.

Admittedly we have a real crisis with global warming, and who knows how we will solve the global emergency surrounding pronouns. But the fact is that in area after area from human rights to education to the slowing population growth the planet is making progress.

This is a thread for good news.

Three new studies suggest omicron has lower hospitalization risk and is milder than other variants

This is finally some good Covid news. It was funny how reluctant the press seemed to be to report the news that Omicron was less deadly. Now they can no longer ignore it.

@maxdancona,
I am no 'doom-monger', Max.
And, that you post such, in order to assert hope and positivity, in fearful climes - Is why I choose to respond. (Also - This is, possibly, the only thread I, am yet, more than Allowed to 'Quote or Report' on, solely.

Next Summer - We go 'Blue-Ocean', in the Arctic - Albedo is reduced by 25%.
The ability to grow grains at-scale will be diminished by 60-80%.

I am Not going to post ANYTHING on Feedback-loops.

Go and look-up Professor Guy Mcpherson. at 'Nature Bats last.

Or Don't.

Have a super Saturday.

The short term trends (pre-covid) are that hundreds of thousands of people are escaping extreme poverty every year. The long term trends show an even more stark picture.

In the 1700s there was a very small percentage of people (mostly White) who lived in wealth, and the rest of the world were living in extreme poverty. Over the past few centuries we have seen a global move of people out of poverty.

Here is a chart on the growth of Democracy. 250 years ago there were zero democracies. The world was run by autocrats. Now, most of the the world lives under some sort of Democracy.

@maxdancona,
So, what has all this to do with the possibility of the earth being struck in the future by a super massive asteroid or some other heavenly disaster?

Reading the news, I'm thinking not.

Global democracy has a very bad year

The pandemic caused an unprecedented rollback of democratic freedoms in 2020

@Mame,
1. You are in the wrong thread. There is another thread for cherry picking stories to fit a doomsday ideology.

2. My graph is looking at a long term trend over the past 250 years. You story is looking at a short term trend during a single rather uncharacteristic year. They are both valid stories.

If you want to compare the first decade of the 21st century with any other decade... I think you would have trouble finding a better decade than this one on any metric of democracy.

Go ahead. You pick the decade.

@maxdancona,
You made the statement; "Relax! The world is not coming to an end." And I asked the question; "So, what has all this to do with the possibility of the earth being struck in the future by a super massive asteroid or some other heavenly disaster?"

How do you know that such a disaster will not occur in the future, which would be the end of the world of man, or that this expanding universe, will one day be returned to the singularity, from which, according to our best scientists, will be the end of this world.

As you began your walk to the grave on the day you came into existence, so did this generation of the universe. This world, that had a beginning some 13.8 billion years ago, inevitably has an end.
