It's too bad Wal-Mart thought that they needed to close this program. I'm in agreement with the fellow's comment at the end of this article.

Wal-Mart dumps its Friday night 'Singles Shopping' program at Virginia store
at 12:31 on July 23, 2005, EST.

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Wal-Mart has ditched a program that helped single shoppers find love in the discount store's aisles.

Officials at Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., ordered their Roanoke store to put an end to Singles Shopping, the only program of its kind at Wal-Mart's U.S. stores.

Taking a cue from Wal-Marts in Germany, the month-old program encouraged customers on Friday evenings to pick up a red bow they could place on their shopping carts as an invitation to other singles. "Flirt points" were set up in various sections of the store.

A Wal-Mart spokesman declined to comment on the reason behind the program's cancellation. But customer Dale Firebaugh, who showed up Friday night hoping to meet his match, said store employees told him several people had complained.

"I'm disappointed," said Firebaugh, 63. "Where can someone over 40 who doesn't smoke or drink or go to bars meet someone?"

Ha, that's funny.
Why do they need an organized dating service in
a store anyway?

They could go to a local grocery store, see who carries
a basket only and buys tv dinners for one, and approach
them discretely, and replace the tv dinner for one, with
a Stouffers family pack, ha?

Amateurs, all amateurs Wink

I suspect some people are shy, or afraid of being rejected, or feeling foolish, I guess?

That could have happened at Wallmart too Reyn.
Just because it is called "singles night at Wallmart" not
everyone will find his love connection and might be
rejected by others as well. I'd say the odds of
being rejected at Wallmart are probably the same as
in a regular grocery store, or any other place for that
matter.

I suppose you're right.

I know I appreciated belonging to a dating club back in 1978. I met my wife there. I was much too shy to just approach someone in a venue somewhere and strick up a conversation. With the club idea, at least I knew for sure I wasn't "bothering" some poor woman.

Reyn, going to a dating club is different.
Wallmart is really not in the business of selling "love",
they're selling goods and I am sure they didn't close
down the shops just for singles alone.

What if not everyone was informed that Friday is date night at Wallmart and a few shoppers were offended by being
chatted up by a love sick puppy.

I wouldn't like to go to a restaurant either, where all of
a sudden I find out, that this is meet-your-lunch-date day
and I'm in the midst of a dating frenzy where every
5 minutes a new lunchpartner sits next to you and pesters
the heck out of me.

Yes, I see your point, although with the Wal-Mart example, potential singles-meeting-singles, according to the story, would place a red bow on their shopping cart, signaling their "availability".

Anyways, I thought it was an interesting story for others to read....
