One of the phrases is NOT violating the new list of Offensive words published by Brandise University. Can you guess which one?

- I'm killing it in my math class.
- I will take a shot at doing that.
- There should be a trigger warning for this post.
- She is a Freshman this year.
- That party last night was wild.
- The company is trying to recruit more people of color.
- They are whitewashing the most disturbing aspects of the report.
- They really sold her down the river.
- It was a group for people from abusive relationships.
- That cat is my spirit animal.

Only one of these is acceptable to say (according to Brandeis' list). Can you guess which?

I'll guess that this is the OK phrase:
It was a group for people from abusive relationships.

I assume that they object to the following:
killing it
take a shot
trigger warning
Freshman
wild
people of color
whitewashing
sold her down the river
cat

@oralloy,
Quote:
Relationships don’t perpetrate abuse; abusers do. It is important to name that someone is responsible.

Recommended alternative: "Relationship with an abuser"

Nope, Oralloy. Good guess, but the term "abusive relationship" is on the list of offensive phrases.

Guess again?

@maxdancona,
My guess would be that cat is my spirit animal. I can't see how that could offend anyone.

Except maybe cats.

@cherrie,
I expect certain words like trigger, shot and killing are all down to America’s gun culture.

Instead of banning certain words they should stop the NRA shooting up schools.

@cherrie,
Good guess, but no. The issue is the phrase "spirit animal".

Quote:
In some cultural and spiritual traditions, spirit animals refer to an animal spirit that helps guide and/or protect a person through a journey; equating this with an animal you like strips the term of its significance.

@izzythepush,
Spot on Izzy (you killed it)! These words evoke "violent imagery". It isn't just guns, if you "take a stab at it..." that is also considered inaccepatable language.
"
Brandeis actually put a trigger warning on the phrase "trigger warning". That is very funny to me.

@maxdancona,
I posted that just before I went to bed last night and was thinking about it and realised that phrase would be cultural appropriation.

So I don't know which phrase wouldn't be offensive to someone.

I'll take another guess:

- They are whitewashing the most disturbing aspects of the report.

Some of them like "killing it" and "take a shot" are clearly on the list.

Of the ones that are not definitively on the list, "whitewashing" seems like the one that they'd be most likely to object to.

But since it is an absurd list, perhaps that means it's not on the list.

Good job! That's the one I made up.
