The UK and Covid-19: Why the death rate is so high.

I was looking at the covid statistics. The UK statistics were shockingly bad. I initially thought that the covid infection rates int he UK were bad, but they are not. It is the mortality rate that is incredibly bad.

The UK had fewer infections (by far) than the US, but more deaths than the US per million people. The UK also had a significantly higher excess mortality rate (the number of people under 65 who died above a normal year) than any European country outside of Bulgaria.

It is possible that the number of infections in the UK were underreported. There is also talk it is the vast economic inequality in the UK may have something to do with it.

Whatever it is, it is curious.

@maxdancona,
No sources just lies, vast economic inequality?

Horseshit.

Nobody over here has to worry about their health insurance not picking up the tab.

You really are a spiteful little fascist.

It is easier for Izzy to throw out nationalistic insults rather than to examine the facts for himself. But OK I provide the links.

1. Here is the story from the BBC... asking "Why are the UK death rates so high" and suggesting economic inequality is the problem.

2. Here is the story from the BMJ (British medical journal) discussing the excess death rate in the UK.

3. Here is one of any number of sites with the raw statistics showing that the deaths per 1 million people is higher in the UK than in the US.
