If there are a number of reasons, you would say "for several reasons" - that means there are more than one separate reasons.
Should it be "there is more than one separate reason" instead?

Yes, it is correct, and very common, to use "for several reasons".

A good rule of thumb is less is more, if you use more words to give the same meaning you’re being verbose.
“There is more than one separate reason,” is verbose in the extreme.
