Actually it happened back when it was on radio in 1950. Some sort of contest for the popular T-or-Q radio game show’s 10th Anniversary. The name just stuck afterwards. It was originally Hot Springs, NM.

There is a town called Petting in Bavaria...doesn't mean anything to Americans, but we Krauts call Petting what you identify as 2nd base Smile

Dog's Prairie in French.
Named after Alim, an Indian chief, which meant chien in French, dog in English.
