The problems with corporate livestock production are method and motive. They pump the animals full of antibiotics because they pack so many together that disease would be disaster for them. And that leads us to motive. Their motive is the bottom line. They could avoid the problems of disease in the feed lot by having many small feed lots--but one or two huge feed lots make sense from a capitalists point of view. They pump them full of growth hormone to get the most meat out of each animal--once again for the bottom line. They buy cheaper feed which is filled out with the residues of the slaughter house, and that's where BSE (bovine spongiform encephalitis, or mad cow disease) comes from.

Vegans often point out that grazed animals use a lot of land for a very poor return. That's reasonable, as far as it goes, but it doesn't go very far. Most of the meat that people in the industrialized world eat is not from grazed animals, it's from feed lot animals. Feed lots mean all of the problems i've already described, and several others, because the motive is to maximize return while minimizing costs--and the public be damned.
