I am a complete novice when it comes to electrical work. I was following a guide I found online to see if one of my outlets was properly grounded. When I probed the hot and neutral prongs, there was a power flicker and there was a puff of smoke from my multimeter. Is there a chance that I damaged anything in my house? I should also add that no breakers were tripped and the outlet still works as usual.
@Larrity,
No, no risk to the house. You likely had the MM selector switch in the wrong position. You need to have it set to read voltage up to 250V. It is probably fried now, but it might work in other switch positions. The good news is your house is fine.
@engineer,
Thank you so much for the response. I was really worried there.
