Dr. Marco Vietor and Paul Crusius have been creating successful businesses since college. Now they lead hear.com, the fastest growing hearing aid company in the world.

Should it be "since they were in college" instead?

Agreeing with Sturgis and adding a simple rule of thumb, that in language less is more. If your words don’t add anything to the sentence leave them out. ‘They were in,’ is superfluous.
