Spelling of badminton

Any reason why "badminton" is spelled with "bad". It seems to me that it should be "bat", consistent with "bat" used to play certain games like table tennis.

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,

Its exact origin remains obscure. The name derives from the Duke of Beaufort's Badminton House
in Gloucestershire, but why or when remains unclear. As early as 1860, a London toy dealer named
Isaac Spratt published a booklet entitled Badminton Battledore – A New Game, but no copy is known
to have survived...

@Region Philbis,
There’s a five day event, the Badminton Horse Trials that happens annually at Badminton House.

No. Rolling Eyes You don't use bats in table tennis or badminton. You use stringed rackets. None of these sports are baseball or cricket (sports where bats are used).
