converting 120 vac into 2 phases

Could you run 1 hot wire (120) to a load and instead of leaving the load through the neutral wire go to a phase converter (180 degrees phase deference) and connect back to the original hot wire? Maybe a diode or some kind of check valve between phase converter and hot line?
