Haunted Ice Maker

I have a Frigidaire refrigerator/freezer that is approximately 6 years old. It has the double doors above with the ice maker in the refrigerator and the sliding bottom that is the freezer. Everything works properly with the exception of the ice maker. For the last 4 years the ice maker quits working in the fall usually between Labor Day and Halloween. All winter I go without ice then around Memorial Day the damn thing will start kicking out nice again. It has become a tradition to make margaritas as soon as there is enough ice to make them on the day it starts working again. I had a tech out once and I don’t think he really believed me. He told me it is a sealed unit and I should just buy a new fridge and get the extended warranty next time. We hung onto to it as everything else is fine and I can simply buy ice. However, it would be nice to have ice all year around. This year the day after Memorial Day my wife came in the bedroom and woke me
up all happy that “we have ice”!!!! The unit is in the house so no matter the time of year the inside temperature is within 10 or 12 degrees. Could it have something to do with the humidity? We change the water filter regularly so I don’t think that’s it. It has kind of become a running joke in my family and in the spring my brothers and sister will call and ask if I have ice yet. Does anyone have any idea what could cause such a strange thing?
Thanks!!

@Latervikes,
I'm mystified, but that's a great title.

@Latervikes,

would the Fridge Ghost be offended if you purchased ice cube trays?

@Latervikes,
Not sure why the tech told you to buy the extended service plan when he was unable to fix the problem. It's not like having an extended service plan makes him more competent.

The ice maker won't make ice until the temperature gets down to a certain value. One guess would be the freezer is getting a little warmer in the winter (which seems counter intuitive.) It also sounds like the ice maker is in the refrigerated section instead of the freezer section, so I'm not sure how it moves air around to keep the ice maker cold. Start by cleaning the refrigerator coils, they can get dusty and impair performance. Also consider calling another repair guy. You can also look up your frig model number on the Internet to see if anyone else has solved this problem.

Maybe it's near a heating vent?

I'm waiting for the Stephen King novella and subsequent movie adaptation of the same title.

Here's a video I pulled from Youtube on ice makers. I found it interesting and it has some ideas on how to troubleshoot your ice maker come fall. 3 minutes long.

"Alexandra, turn the heat up."
"It is already 100 degrees"
"Are you trying to kill me, Allazea?"
