I have been tutoring since (I was in) secondary school to help my family financially.

Are the words within brackets needed to complete the sentence?

No, they’re not.

In the Uk we wouldn’t say in secondary school either, we’d say at secondary school.

Overall it works much better without the bit in brackets.
