renounce vs rebuff

Hi

I'm currently trying to figure out the difference between renounce and rebuff. I suspect there's a difference because all the dictionaries I've looked into have different definitions between the two terms. However, when I look at the examples, they seem completely interchangeable...

@johannornth,
why don't you post a couple of the definitions you've found and maybe people can help you compare and contrast

@johannornth,
There are completely different. Maybe the best thing is to use examples.

I went to get that cute girl's phone number, but she rebuffed me. (That is, she ungraciously rejected my advance). The employment agencies tried to get me to take a new job, but I rebuffed their offers of help.

I was in the leadership of the Sierra Club, but based on their positions on immigration I renounced my affiliation. (That is, I was associated with them, but then I declared I was no longer a part of them.)

@johannornth,
Example:
He renounced (gave up) his American citizenship due to Trump’s incompetent and criminal actions.

Example:
Trump rebuffs (discredits or rebukes) anyone who disagrees with his opinions regardless of the facts.

The more renounce implies a public nature to the display of disapproval,

Whereas rebuff may be in private or the nature of its disapproval (whether public or private) is irrelevant .

Notice any difference?

@ehBeth,
Hi

Sorry, I didn't think it would make a difference. I'll do it next time!

Have a good day
