Ventilation of Indoor Areas

Should indoor areas, especially public areas like stores, movie theaters, and restaurants be ventilated better by sucking air out of the building at a rate sufficient to draw any airborne viruses up, away from people, and out instead of letting them build up where people can breathe them back in?

Would it be possible to pump out indoor air and thus draw in outdoor air constantly without increasing heating/cooling energy use?

What is more important, controlling indoor temperature or evacuating air that contains pathogens before those pathogens circulate around and spread viruses and other infections?

@livinglava,
Yes, it’s possible but not probable due to impracticality and cost prohibition. You’d need weighted shoes to keep from being sucked up into the vents with the virii ... plus people with toupees and hair extensions would need better glue and fastening.

Way back in the ‘80 at the time of discovery of Legionare’s Disease they discovered that a lot of problems came when HVAC units we’re not properly maintained etc.

@Ragman,
...so in these new cash-poor times, there’ll be more of that behavior for save-a-buck tendencies so prevention of illnesses will likely to be back-burner thoughts from landlords and RE investors.

Sorry, but the movie theater, banquet halls, small bars and sit down cafes, and any other place that has serviced people in a confined space with close proximity are going the way of the dinosaur.

I would think you could have fume hoods that suck air up into the ducts previously used for central air/heat.

Wouldn't it also cost less to just pull air up into the ducts with fans/blowers than cooling/heating the air?

I don't think the breeze/draft would have to be strong enough to suck toupees and hats off people's heads. Were you serious about that or was it just a funny image you wanted to mention as a joke?

I think it feel like a gentle breeze coming across you and slightly upward. If outdoor air is hot, it might not feel as cold as air-conditioning, but it would be like an outdoor breeze feels in the shade, which isn't bad even in the summer heat.

In two years they will be back, and probably sooner than that.

Do you really think we are going to ban dancing, and wrestling, and live music?
