Wikipedia: McCartney said he came up with the name "Eleanor" from actress Eleanor Bron, who had starred with the Beatles in the film Help!. "Rigby" came from the name of a store in Bristol,[11] "Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers", which he noticed while seeing his girlfriend of the time, Jane Asher, act in The Happiest Days of Your Life.[12] He recalled in 1984, "I just liked the name. I was looking for a name that sounded natural. 'Eleanor Rigby' sounded natural."

@edgarblythe,
You can visit Eleanor Rigby’s grave in Liverpool. McCartney would have seen it, but as you say it never registered consciously, maybe subconsciously.

@izzythepush,
Could be. Often when I begin writing a new short story, I get the uncomfortable feeling I am rewriting something I read from another writer over fifty years ago.

Phil Ochs manages to make it that "Thomas Paine and Jesse James are old friends."

@Walter Hinteler,
I'm sure, both are historical figures, the latter even a German Wink

In this song, real and mythical historical figures occupy the same grungy neighborhood.
