(CNN) - "I think it's time I tell you what I tell my family," California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a stark news conference overnight as he ordered all 40 million residents of America's most populous state to stay at home. "This is not a permanent state, it is a moment in time ... We will look back at these decisions as pivotal."

Should it be "it's time I told" instead?

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
"I think it's time I tell you what I tell my family."

"I think it's time I told you what I told my family."

"I think it's time I told you what I tell my family."

"I think it's time I tell you what I told my family."

Each sentence can describe a distinct case.

But in this case, I like the topmost one, the original. "What I tell my family" implies that a conversation is ongoing, and choosing to address all Californians in the same manner is just good old-fashioned people-politics in a time of crisis.
