A while back, someone on A2K, can't remember who, expressed irritation a few times when people, especially those that were new, started a sentence with "so"

I do it all the time. In speech and writing. Does anyone else?
To me, it's a friendly little word that just indicates I'm fixin' to say something.
Get ready, 'cause here I come with another hare brained idea.

Looking it up, it seems "so" is a discourse-marker. Which sounds like a fancy way to say "I'm fixin' to talk now."

What impression of that word, given in the context I use it, give you?

I never much thought about it, but now I have.

So?

I've been known to start a sentence with "So". And yeah, it's okay by me.

(as is beginning with "And" or "Well" )

You must uv picked it up in Jersey, may while down the shore...

My usual would be along the lines of, "So anyway it occurred to me..."

I usually begin a sentence with, "Listen up, ya buncha duds ---" It's all inclusive and shows commitment on my part, while alerting folks that something worth hearing is about to be said. '

Well that was interesting. Until it suddenly wasn't.

I Really liked what boomerang said

"To me it is sort of like a "Vonnegut or Palahnuik "echo" that refers you back to something earlier, or focuses your attention on what is being said."

Yes. So is very Vonnegut/Palahnuik.
When I read them, I always have a strong sense of the interwoven fabric of existence. The echos, and the foreshadowing.

Life is strange and marvelous, and "so" to me is an indicator that I'm letting you or someone in on this secret.

BTW, that wasn't the thread. I remember someone who in different threads was just moaning about it, until I told him to STFU.

This piqued my curiosity,
so I checked through all the threads where you told someone to shut the **** up. Sorry I'm late.
