@farmerman,
I will be interested in your reaction this time around.

I first read it as an awkward ~sixteen year old who was a-political but patriotic, and 1984 was in the far future. I saw it as a tragic love story too. I already 'knew' who Big Brother was - the Evil USSR.

The second time I read it was fifty years later. What an eye opener. Not only about the society we live in, but how differently I view virtually everything and how little I knew.

Why has this thread turned into a discussion of 1984? Because I mentioned it another thread about socialism? Is it possible to discuss topics in the thread where they were raised?

@livinglava,
For me, I go wherever the evidence or a good conversation leads. I’ve moved on to the book Izzy brought up. Haven’t finished it yet, but when I’ve recovered from this morning’s cocktail I’m going to comment on that fabulous first paragraph.

Well, try to be considerate and avoid filling up threads with irrelevant posts that can deter people from reading and participating in the thread after opening it based on the title.

No, but how often do you get tired of scrolling through a thread for something interesting when it's filled with a bunch of tangents and fighting?

What are you talking about? Have what more abundantly? Ridicule, fighting, and other off-topic thread noise?
