Robocalls and hospitals

I typically will not pick up the phone if it is not from someone or somewhere I know. I recently got a call from Mercy Medical Center. I was not home but I saw I missed a call and my phone showed I had a message. I looked first to see who it was from and show it was Mercy Medical Center. My heart dropped thinking immediately has someone had an emergency? I listen to the message nothing.

I decided to look it up and seems this is spam. Then on doing a further search I see hospitals are being slammed with robocalls to the point it may cause life or death situations.

It’s one thing to have a personal moment of panic and another where it is really having an impact on lives. Can’t the telecom companies do anything about? There must be some sort of technology they can install ... I know spam is filtered for email... now not 100%..but it does significantly decrease my email spam. Isn’t there something similar for phones ?

@Linkat,
FTC, Law Enforcement Partners Announce New Crackdown on Illegal Robocalls

Robocalls bill looks on track to become law, but lacks bite of earlier House measure

This is a start but it's not going to be easy. The communications companies will drag their feet and the lobbyists will work to weaken any legislation. It's really important for citizens to hold Washington accountable.

When we don't recognize the number and they're not identified, we just ignore it. Some scam calls just want you to say "yes." They have proof you said "yes" to something. https://www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/5691-bbb-warning-if-caller-asks-can-you-hear-me-just-hang-up

@Linkat,
When my husband is in the middle of medical stuff I always answer the phone in case it's about an appointment, test results, getting a return call, and more. For myself as well if I know I'm getting a callback from somewhere. Sometimes someone is calling me from their own cell, and not the main #, so they aren't in my contacts.

I always answer the phone with "This is chai" and it's so annoying when I am expecting various calls that are important, and I hear "Don't hang up! Your google business account......"

@Linkat,
These people also copy legitimate phone numbers. I doubt very much that your call was from the Medical Centre.

My phone provider offers a robocall detection and my phone only rings once and then the robocall is aborted. It's been such a pleasure having this feature and I don't have to answer the phone any longer. These robocalls have gotten creative and they use local numbers now, but somehow my provider detects them. I have Spectrum as provider.

@CalamityJane,
I get occasional calls that are not only local, they look like my own name and number. Century Link does not allow me to block my own number. Oh, they never speak.

@roger,
If we don't recognize the phone number that shows up on our tv screen, we just ignore it.

@cicerone imposter,
It is easy to ignore if you are not a hospital - they cannot in case it is a patient that requires important medical help. Unfortunately they can not risk and not answer a call and like Chai stated - if you have a loved one in the hospital or in medical care - again you not going to risk not answering the call because it is an annoying robocall or sales call.

My kids were away with family on a trip - and we have family members all over the country - some of which have serious medical issues. If I see a call coming in from a legit medical center, I am going to answer. And seeing there was a call with a message (at the time I had not listened so it is no way that you see it is a hang up) - I am worried.

Fortunately for me it was more a moment of angst until I was able to verify it was a robocall from the leukemia society (or something like) and not that they did not want to leave a serious message behind, rather than a hospital having their phones tied up due to robocalls when they might need to help a patient.
