What are the best mystery books you read? What are the best murder mystery movies you've seen?

@tsarstepan,
I can't give specific titles, but I can tell you which mystery writers I admire: Ngaio Marsh, Sawal and Wahloo (a Swedish couple, not sure of the spelling), Louise Penny. I read the complete works of Sherlock Holmes. Some of the stories were excellent; others, not so much.

I'm sure there are others. I'll see what I can excavate from my memory.

@tsarstepan,
There have been many books and several films over the years. Hard to rate or decide which was the best. As is true with a lot of things, it varies depending on my mood at the time.

Does Bernie count? He uncovers lots of mysteries and other unsavoury goings on, and there usually is a twist, but they're more thrillers than anything else.

I like Iain Pears's "Art History Mysteries" and the Evan Horne series by Bill Moody. They're a break from the hard-boiled detective/cop mysteries — Jonathan Argyll's an art historian and Evan Horne's a jazz pianist.

(A shout out to izzythepush for introducing me to the Bernie Gunther series.)
