French Twist (the hair style)

I can't believe I never discovered this hair style before. I would see women wearing one and think - God, that looks really complicated, must have really good hands.

I'd usually get my hair cut when it would get like 4 inches below my shoulders - past that I couldn't do a thing with it, by mid day it would end up looking all scragly (at least to me)

Well, with remodeling the house, work, family things I just couldn't get a chance to go to my hair dresser.

Just to get it out of my way, I put it up a couple times in those clips where the ends all come out in a fun untidy look.

But it just wasn't me. It didn't feel right for work, and anyway, I kind of like going for the classy look.

Anyway, I looked at a couple places on the internet on how to do a French Twist, I practiced for a bit while watching TV, and after a little while, it became the easiest thing!

I initially began by keeping it together with pins (there's a trick to them too - insert into a small amount ofhair, rotate the pin 180 degrees, which secures the bit of hair in the pin - that baby ain't goin' nowhere! and push the pin in at that new angle)
That even became too much effort, so I bought a curved 5 inch comb. I found the end of it touched the bottem of my skull, driving me crazy, so I nipped off a 1/2 in from one end.

Anyway - now I don't even need to do anything to my hair, since in the AM I comb it out, twist it out, secure with comb and 1 pin, squirt of spray.
Most days this takes less than 2 minutes, and I don't have to even look at my hair all day long. Plus, it looks elegant, but not over dressy.

Oh - eventually I got my hair cut back to shoulder length, that's about the shortest you can go and still get the twist up.

Considering it's getting pretty hot here, that a plus too.

Oooh, post photos -- I try the twist every now and then and I haven't got a huge amount of patience or time. I own about a zillion clips and my hair is, uh, about 2 inches, 3 inches past my shoulders, so I'm in range.

Anyway, I'm sure you look very nice -- I think the twist is very sophisticated looking, and it seems to look good on nearly anyone.

Good grief- I wore my hair in a French twist in the 1960's!!

For those who don't know what we are talking about:

In the late 90's I wore my hair like that often, with one of those combs. At the time, they were sold everywhere, and the way to wear them was in a twist and then a little spray of hair poofing out the top.

I still do it occasionally to keep my hair out of my face if I'm doing something, or while it's drying after I wash it.

Yeah, I'm not patient with hair stuff either, that's why I did my practice time while watching a movie. After a while, it just starts to "feel" right.

Here's my method Jespah, in case you're interested.

I lean back and comb my hair backwards and grasp it in a firm (but not too tight) pony tail in my right hand. The hair on the sides of you head should be going as horizontal as you can get.

Give the pony tail one good 360 degree twist clockwise in your right hand. (let the hair slid through you hand, and grasp firmly again after the twist.) This secures the twists.

Now, raise the pony tail straigt up, vertical to the back of your head. Do a couple more 360's, more loosely this time, sliding your right hand up to the end of your hair as you go.
If you don't want a "poof" at the top of your twist, use your left hand to smooth the hair from your crown downwards after each twist.

You should now look like you have a loose rope going straight up from the middle of the back of your head.

Now, the tricky part - at least for me. Holding the loose rope in your right hand, use your left hand to fold the top of the rope (the part that rises above your head to the left side of the rope that is against your head.
Use your right hand to roll the doubled over rope of hair into your head, making a tube, tucking the ends in with the left hand.

It feels like you're making a jelly roll.

When your satisfied with the look of the back of your head, take that 5 inch curved comb (the kind your grandmother of great grandmother used.) and just insert it into the tucked in part, pushing it WAY in to secure.

The combs I bought have teeth that meet in the middle, so when you push the hair past that point, it won't slide back out. They're only 3 or 4 dollars.

I know the directions sound confusing, Confused Confused but when your actually doing it, you realize how easy it is. Surprised Surprised

You're right, it look good on any woman, it makes teens and twenty somethings look more sophisticated, and is quick, easy and attractive for anyone.

Let me know when you get the hang of it. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

My hair won't stay up like that. It's too thick and has a mind of its own; in about five minutes the style starts to come undone gradually until it's completely unraveled.

Chai, what are these? "those clips where the ends all come out in a fun untidy look"

Yeah, me too synonymph... I can't seem to get my hair to stay up unless there are lots of pins in it. I had 124 pins in my hair on my wedding day. Not kidding.

Something like this:

Or this:

http://www.scunci.com/images/products/productimages/154_l.jpg

I used to have about 6, much simpler styles than the one shown, now down to one, just black and with no particular frippery.

I'd do it when my hair was slightly wet, that helped the whole thing stay. Worked quite well actually. (I'd missed the "fun untidy look" reference, I think that may be the same as "a little spray of hair poofing out the top" that I referred to.)

Big claw clips, right? I had a few of those, but I always break them.

It's hard to find one of those large enough (not long but wide enough) to hold my hair.

They (Scunci) has lots of different widths; the big one at the top holds an absolute ton. I have very thick hair, no problem.

My hair is too fine to hold clips with any reliability, but I twist my hair up on top of my head and anchor it there where my skull can help support the weight of the hardware.

Yeah, I have girlfriends who have really thick hair.
even if you good get it to stay up, you'd probably get a headache.

Right before I last cut my hair, it was down to my mid back, it was hard to get it all in, PLUS - it would give me a nasty headache.

I just google "hair too thick for French Twist" and found the following site

www.haarkram.e-something.de/troubleshooting.html

it gives some tips for that, and some cute hair ornaments.

I wear my hair in twists like these and can put it up in a 'french twist' and it looks very elegant.

Wow - I thought curly hair would be hard.
I guess not if you have the twists.
And confident fingers.

I love the French Twist! It can go from casual to very elegant. I usually do a twist when I am dressing up for a very special date. They do date back to the 60's at least if not further. I fell in love with the twist when I first saw it worn by Grace Kelly so long ago. I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world!

I've had a few of those Scunci clips over the years. Haven't found one yet that will actually hold my hair up - they start sliding down from the weight in about 10 - 15 minutes.

Well ladies - Sounds like we are having some major hair issues!

Maybe be could come up with a new invention/system. What do you think?

For me, I wish there was some pill you could take that would cause your hair to grow out a particular color.

Of course one that wouldn't give you cancer or have the hair on your face grow out black or red or whatever.

Some people look forward to golden slippers and some to silver crowns--I'm hoping for manageable hair--and reliable bones.
