so what do you make of this? Is there life? What sort of life? And why aren't we ready for it?

@Linkat,
It would be single cell type life, but any life outside of Earth is going to set off a massive religious debate.

Quote:
There is, of course, a religious angle to all of this. The origins of life on Earth are still the subject of debate today and science has always had to compete with stories for mindshare.

I mean, we live in a time where a not-insignificant chunk of people still claim to believe that the Earth is flat, so finding alien life on another world is sure to come with its own host of conspiracy theories and true believers spouting… whatever it is they truly believe.

I think you will see people claiming (1) it's all made up by evil scientists to discredit religion or (2) it's really contamination from Earth and not Martian at all, or maybe a combination of those two.

@Linkat,
Given that large impact events happening to either earth or Mars surfaces have likely already had transfer at least spores an other such simple lifeforms between the two planets therefore finding life on Mars that is similar life to earth life seems highly likely.

And this is just the type of attitude that supports the idea the "we are not ready for it."

Attitude??????????

Are you promoting the idea that finding life on Mars would have some religion elements and or meanings all by itself?

Something of the nature of the books by C. S. Lewis?

Yeah that you do not believe that there are martians.

@Linkat,
I'm ready for life on Mars, but my spaceship isn't.

@izzythepush,
Seriously though - I have this neighbor who is always in his garage. I go out with the dogs at 6am his garage is door is open with the lights on and his music is blasting - same thing late at night. He is married with two daughters (one in college; one in high school). His garage activities have been going on since we moved here (over 7 years) - he is always in there "working".

I am convinced he is building a spaceship and one day we will walk out there and see him and the garage lifting off into space. I can give you the address - he might be closer to finishing his than you or else you can work together and get it done more quickly.

@Linkat,
Maybe he's just keeping his marriage together. I've known couples whose happiness depends on them seeing their partner for just a few hours a day, any longer and they argue.

In any event your neighbour's spaceship is much further along the line than mine.

I'm convinced there has been life on Mars and that it is possible subterranean types might be alive still.
