Here are the limiting factors right now:
We do not have a heavy lift vehicle capable of putting a Mars capable ship in orbit.
We don’t have a Mars capable spaceship
We don’t have a life support system capable of keeping astronauts alive for the required number of years a simple mission would take (6 months there, 12 months on planet, 6 months back). Even the Space station needs regular resupply with food, air etc to stay viable.
We have to figure out a way to protect astronauts from the radiation environment of space.
