Kind of a book that has characters trying to outsmart/ backstab/ betray/ deceive each other...perhaps like a bit from Crime and Punishment when Raskie is being interrogated by Ippolit...and a bit like some parts from the Ender's Game series...
Please recommend... Razz

I got this sudden urge after reading Deathnote (http://manga.anime-source.com/manga/modules.php?name=Manga&id=10)- an excellent manga. Probably the best one I've ever read.

It is a very good book.

But be forewarned: Though it's subtitled "The Early Years" there are no further books. When I finished the book I was desperate for more and really upset that I never could find out about The Later Years.

Oh!

I thought of another one I like - "An American Tragedy".

A lot of people don't like it, finding it too dry and wordy and slow, but talk about betrayal and deception!

"Cousin Bette" by Balzac might fall into this category.

Ender's Game was a series? It seemed complete as I read it.

Xenophobe, Speakers of the Dead are the sequels. My friend says that Ender's Game is better than its sequels though.

Hey, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for them in spite of the disrecommendation.

Your friend is right, Ray, Ender's Game was interesting, but it was basically a short story mascarading as a novel. The sequels sucked. Orson Scott Card is a card-carrying nut case, too.

Orson Scott Card is a Latter Day Saint (Mormon), and the Ender Series might reflect LDS theology, but I know practically nothing about LDS teaching so I have no opinion on that.

About the Enders books: I was very surprised to learn that Card is a mormon and a gay basher, because his books seem quite liberal, don't you think?

About ender's series:

If you liked ender's game (book), you might also enjoy ender's shaddow. Is written more or less like ender's game but it focuses on Bean's actions (it's a paralel ender's game book).

IMHO, the sequels of ender's game where also great, even though not as action centric as the first book. I liked how the characters interacted.

But the last book in the ender's series... nope... did not liked it.

And in the shaddow series, except the Ender's Shaddow, all are a little bit boooooooring... annoying... and so on...

I am curious about G.R.R.Martins. Fantasy, AFAIK. But be warned: if you touch fantasy, you might not be able to stop! (I know, because I like anime&manga&SF and after starting the fiction books... I cannot stop anymore from reading.

I would go for Dune, the original ones. Smile)

This is not fiction, it's non fiction, more like a study of the past, and the present.

Now lets see from memory if I remember. I have not found the book yet. Hope I get the author's name right.
