I should say that i was very impressed to learn that the Sozlet knows that spiders are our friends, and that we should have a care for them. That's what inspired me to tell her the tale of Arachne.

And she loved it. She's talked about it several times since. She loves to explain things, to ask people variations of "do you know why...?" and then fill them in if they don't.

You should get some Greek mythology for her . . . Goldsmith's would be good, i prefer it to Edith Hamilton. We talked about The Tanglewood Tales, but i don't know that the story of Arachne appears in that. For that matter, i have only run across it in Ovid's Metamorpheses--don't know if it appears in Hamilton or Goldsmith.

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye out. I have Metamorphoses and have retold her tales myself, but the actual language is a bit much for her yet. Part of why I like Hamilton for now, more utilitarian in terms of reminding myself and then re-telling.

Nice that you are taking care of the Classics for her because she won't get that in school.

I don't kill them, I escort them out -- outdoors gone with the door closed.

Have you seen the Ted Rall cartoon with "Spider Money" from early May? I don't think it is online, but I have a creepy copy if you want...

Hedge apples (also known as hedge balls) are supposed to repel spiders.

Where would one procure such a thing?

Any price, any distance, if they keep spiders away I will decorate with them.

I don't think it is any coincidence that soon after starting this thread a "click me" ad appears that features mutiple crawling spiders... I think they may be coming after you Bella.

You can find hedge apples at supermarkets, produce stores, co-ops, and online. I'd try Kroger, Fresh Approach (if it still exists), or this lovely place.
