I would like to understand forums a little better. I know that forums can be helpful in finding information, making friends, ranting, etc.

But, what do the owners, and those that run it get out of this?

I know that the forums set the rules for the members, but who sets the rules for the forums?

I know some forums ask for money, and sell things.

How does one start a forum?
Are forums checked out by the Government?
Is there a difference between forums that ask for money, sell things, and those that don't?
Who created the first forum on the internet?

Thanks,

AE
