Hey, got a question: When products are marketed as educational and sold at a reduced rate, they are not allowed to be used professionally are they?

Every contract varies on who can use it and where and why. Microsoft, for years, had "any educational purpose," meaning it didn't have to be an accredited school and it worked for anyone K-Doctorate. So if your kid played on Visio, you could buy yourself a copy for $100. Now I think their policy is "Full-time university students, or high school seniors within 6 months of graduation." That's a big leap, but it shows that it's worth reading each company's contract. And it's worth it, because the prices are really really cheap.

But if you're not in school in any way, and no one who's using the software is in school, and you're using it for a professional purpose, you can't buy the cheap version.

Or you can stick with open-source.
