Another Manchester song:

In Manchester, that city
Of cotton, twist and twill,
Lived the subject of my song,
The cause of all my ill;
She was handsome, young, and twenty,
Her eyes were azure blue,
Admirers she had plenty,
And her name was Dorothy True.

She was very fond of dancing,
Allow me to remark,
But one fine day she danced away
With a calico printer's clerk.

I'll spare you the other eight verses.....

No, I'm a Londoner (now in exile in Kent).
- and if anybody starts to sing "Maybe It's Because..." I will track them down using my extra-terrestrial powers and squeeze their nose flat in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary.

I once went on a hillwalking trip through Transylvania and every time I answered the question where did I come from, somebody would start singing that. They must teach it in Romanian schools or something. Along with "My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean" which was always the thing that came next. Aaaaargh. It's enough to make a girl claim to be Welsh or something.

I wouldn't dream of it!

I'm a scouse by birth, I have to endure the "what do you call a scouser in a suit - the defendant' jokes, oh, ha ha hee hee. I sooo know what you mean...barely a day goes by at work without some reference to my roots...usually related to football (yawn).

Speaking of songs about Manchester, anyone know this old standby ...

Quote:
Manchester Cathedral

Oooh, Manchester Cathedral, you're bringin' me down
You stood and you watched as my baby left town
You coulda done somethin', hey, you didn't try
You didn't do nothin', you just let her walk by

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that girl
She wouldn't have gone far away if only you'd started ringin' your bell

Manchester Cathedral, you're bringin' me down
You stood and you watched as my baby left town

Hey, Manchester Cathedral, you are bringin' me down
You stood and you watched as, you watched her go by, my baby left town
You coulda done somethin', but you didn't even try
You didn't do nothin', you didn't ding-dong, you let her get by

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that girl
She wouldn't have gone far away, if only you'd started ringin' your bell

Now, Manchester Cathedral, man, you've brought me down
You just stood there and watched as my baby left town!

Oh yeah, speaking of breastfeeding .... I have a friend who grew up in Iraq .... he tells a story of his recollection of breast feeding. Yes, he remembers the experience. He thinks he did it until he was 5-6. Now, the story gets even more bizarre as he describes the practice in his neighborhood where children would breastfeed with mothers other than their own -- at least he did. And with more than just one other mom. In other words, if he's out playing at any of his friends' houses down the block, and gets hungry, he would simply latch on to his friend's mom.

He swears its a true story. Confused

You are obviously not a Mancunian ...... Not even an honorary one such as myself.

It is also entirely possible that you didn't know I was -- as we Mancunian's are fond of saying -- taking the piss?

Now then, now then, now then, guys and gals, ooo, uuu, ooo

It's really hard to type a Jimmy Saville impression!

Syntinen, you should know by now that simply posting a 'no songs about Londoners' will provoke them!

All right my son
leave it out
turn it in
do leave off
knock it on the 'ead

Or....as they say in the Arthur Daley tribute song :-

"Alright my son, say no more, leave it out,
No bovver, as it happens its... your shout,
Straight up, pull the uvver, in a right two and eight,
Hang about, wots the damage chief?, who's yer mate?
The geezer wiv the bunny an' the trilby hat,
Reckons he's legit, but 'e ain't all that,
Arfur Daley, little dodgy maybe,
But underneaf, he's alright."
